Walkabout (Nicholas Roeg, 1971, Australia)
Roeg's first project as a solo director is one of the finest films about Australia and in particular the European civilization imposed upon it yet made. As with Ted Kotcheff's Wake in Fright (1971) "outsiders" seem better suited to confront these issues than we are ourselves, perhaps because Australian film-makers tend to be resolutely urban creatures and so see the landscape more distantly and mythopoetically (the script was by Edward Bond, an Englishman who had never been Downunder whilst Roeg had scouted locations as a camera operator on The Sundowners. 1960). Jenny Agutter and David Gulpilil are both excellent in what is a considerably darker interpretation of the novel by James Vance Marshall. And that's Roeg's 7 year old son, Lucien, playing Agutter's brother. BH
