This Scottish film is a likable coming-of-age story with Gordon John Sinclair as Gregory, a gangly streak of a lad smitten by love for a girlie (Dee Hepburn) who plays on his soccer team. It is unassumingly charming, with a well-written BAFTA-winning script by Forsyth who captures the everydayness of his characters with great credibility and gets performances from his cast to match. However, production-wise it is reminiscent of the light teen drama series seen on television at 6.30 p.m., and is not the most rewarding of experiences cinematically. Surprisingly enough, it is included in the BFI list of 100 Best British Films.
FYI: There was 1999 a sequel, Gregory's Two Girls. also directed by Forsyth and his last film to date, that did not fare so well,
