It will come as little surprise that Jonas Åkerlund's background is in music video as this hyperactive druggie comedy with music by Billy Corgan is clearly intended to appeal to dope-addled MTV geeks. Whilst starting with much promise Åkerlund is unable to match the pace and pizzaz of the opening scene and the film settles down into a deadly conventional storyline that character-wise shoots its load too early.
Jason Schwartzman plays a middle-class crystal meth addict whose habit has led him into the arms of a hopeless bunch of drug-fucked losers played by a diverse cast of relatively well-known names including John Leguizamo, Mena Suvari (so this is what becomes of American Beauty?), and Mickey Rourke, with Deborah Harry as a dyke running a phone sex business.
More indebted to the sophmoronic rocks-off humour of Animal House than the tradition of far more intriguing Adventures in Drugland such as Buffalo 66, Spun is a series of funny-sick gags with a perfunctory narrative that exhausts its potential by about half-time.
