Seeing Other People

Slot this romantic comedy straight into the whimsical school of American independent film-making - cutely offbeat characters in cutely offbeat situations pepped up by a cutely onbeat pop soundtrack. In this case its Ed and Alice, a nice couple about to get happily married until Alice decides she needs to sow her wild oats. Trouble is, not only is she not very good at it but she insists that poor Ed, who's been there, done that, hear all about her adventures.

With a nice comedy-of-errors premise, the script is cleverly written, no doubt with a good deal of autobiographical experience included, by Maya Forbes and Wolodarsky, who have a background in television writing. The outcome is a charmingly absurdist and often funny film with Julianne Nicholson suitably daffy as Alice, Jay Mohr balancing her well with his slightly exasperated, drily ironic Ed and a winning selection of well-played support characters who carry the saga to its expected conclusion.
