Who Loves The Sun
Who Loves The Sun is a modest entry into the dysfunctional family drama catalogue which despite a rather woolly script engages mainly because director Matt Bissonnette keeps the story moving within its limited parameters.
Set in a tranquil part of Ontario it concerns a moody young man (Lukas Haas) who shows up the lakeside home of the parents of his childhood best friend, Daniel (Adam Scott). Why this is so is far from clear but it turns out that five years ago Will caught Daniel porking his wife, Maggie (Molly Parker), and consequently disappeared on some kind of spiritual odyssey. Daniel, now a successful writer, turns up and the mum for some reason invites Maggie to join them.
It’s hothouse emotions in a cool place as the thirty-something lads try to win over their mutual love. Will and Daniel carry on like a pair of brats, behaviour that is supposedly meant to be a legacy of their childhood relationship but which is incongruously and annoyingly juvenile. Small wonder that Maggie’s over both of them but why the parents play host to this ménage à trois manqué is a mystery until a neat plot twist explains the contorted dynamics.
With solid ensemble playing, a soothing setting and a wry attitude to relationships, Who Loves The Sun is a pleasant diversion.
